“The Labour of Media (Studies): Activism, Education, and Industry,” organized by a collective of PhD students in Film and Moving Image Studies and Communications Studies at Concordia, is set to begin Thursday with a workshop and keynote with Vicki Mayer, Professor of Communication at Tulane. The workshop, Ethnographic Research in Media Studies: Practice, Methodology, and Ethics for Fieldwork, will be held in the GEM Lab from 2-4 PM and will be run by Dr. Mayer along with Joshua Neves (CURC, Film Studies, Concordia) and Alessandra Renzi (Communications, Concordia). Registration is required for this event. At 6 PM , Dr. Mayer will present her keynote, “Fun and Loathing in Media Studies: Notes from the Field.”

About the conference:
“The Labour of Media (Studies): Activism, Education, and Industry” is a three day conference addressing the intersections of media studies as a discipline and broader issues of contemporary labour. We want to create a venue for discourse, and to encourage activist engagements with topics such as casualization, competition, colonization, and limitations to academic freedom in the context of media industry and labour research. As knowledge workers we must confront and articulate the normative bounds placed on our activities in order to mobilize outside of the institution. We must also engage with our comrades in the industries and networks we study in order to generate more robust bonds between contexts of knowledge production, cognitive labour, and so-called creative economies.
The conference will be held at Concordia University, Montréal and other venues across the city from November 15-17, 2018, and will feature a variety of panels, keynote sessions, workshops, and screenings.
