What’s Happening? Upcoming Events in Montreal (Feb 19-25)

Updated: Oct 27, 2020

Looking for something to do this mid-term break (aside from catching up with your school work, of course)? Here are a few things you can check out this coming week, February 19-25, 2017.

Before he directed last year’s Isabelle Huppert-starring Elle, Paul Verhoeven directed this psychosexual thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. According to Variety’s original review, the film “rivets attention through its sleek style, attractive cast doing and thinking kinky things, and story, which is as weirdly implausible as it is intensely visceral.” Check out this 35mm print as part of CineClub/Film Society screening on Sunday, February 19, 6:30pm at Cinema deSeve.

“The question is whether privileged elites should dominate mass communication, and should use this power as they tell us they must – namely to impose necessary illusions, to manipulate and deceive the stupid majority and remove them from the public arena,” Noam Chomsky says. “The question in brief is whether democracy and freedom are values to be preserved, or threats to be avoided. In this possibly terminal phase of human existence, democracy and freedom are more than values to be treasured, they may well be essential to survival.”

On Monday, February 20, 7pm at Concordia, you can catch Cinema Politica’s 25th anniversary screening of Mark Achbar & Peter Wintonick’s Manufacturing Consent, which explores the life and ideas of Chomsky.

The Art of Grant Writing (Feb 22-23, 6-9pm)

Are you an artist looking for tips on grant writing? Concordia is hosting two workshops this week that will feature Montreal, Quebec, and Canadian arts granting organizations discussing funding, emerging-artist development programs, and more. The workshops will take place at 6pm, February 22 & 23, in the John Molson Building. Register online today!
